About

“Bloom” for Wind Quintet

Featuring both colorful chords and playful dialogues, “Bloom” draws inspiration from the spring season, seeking to emulate expansion from small beginnings. I started composing “Bloom” – my first-ever piece for a wind quintet – by writing the opening clarinet melody and adding in other layers as the beginning section progresses. While the opening harmonies possess a sweet quality, the chords develop a sense of wonder and vastness, such that the opening section concludes with a broad, triumphant chord.

The second section offers a contrast in tone and texture, developing the material of the first section but in a fun “divertimento” way. The instruments playfully engage in small dialogues, flipping between different rhythms, melodic fragments, and tonal centers.

After a quick escalation, marking the overall climax of the piece, a pause occurs, followed by the third and final section. A return to the original tone and material, the last section begins with a single French horn line and expands as harmonies form among the rest of theensemble. Portraying the color and expansive nature of spring, the piece ends with a final, conclusive major chord.
